Hiking in the Algarve, the region of southern Portugal is becoming more and more of an interesting destination for hikers. The Via Algarvia connects 280km in length the westernmost Algarve at Capo Sao Vincente with the east on the Portuguese to the Spanish border.
Madeira is also a perfect place for hiking, since it features a considerable number of routes, all with great landscapes. The island of Madeira contrasts with the Portuguese mainland all year round for hiking - the summers are not too hot and in winter it remains, with the exception of the altitudes, quite mild. The Levada walks are very popular: Levadas are narrow irrigation canals that cover the entire island in the form of a network over a length of almost 2,000 km.
